Encryption is the process of converting readable data into an unreadable format that can only be deciphered with the correct key. It is fundamental to modern digital security and protects everything from your messages to your bank transactions.
How Encryption Works
At its core, encryption uses mathematical algorithms to transform plaintext (readable data) into ciphertext (encrypted data). The transformation depends on a key, and without the correct key, reversing the process is computationally impractical.
Symmetric Encryption
Symmetric encryption uses the same key for both encryption and decryption. It is fast and efficient, making it ideal for encrypting large amounts of data.
Common Algorithms
AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is the most widely used symmetric algorithm. It supports 128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit key lengths. AES-256 is considered secure against all known attacks, including theoretical quantum computer attacks.
ChaCha20 is an alternative that performs well on devices without AES hardware acceleration. It is used in TLS and by services like Cloudflare.
Asymmetric Encryption
Asymmetric encryption uses a pair of keys: a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption. Anyone can encrypt data with your public key, but only you can decrypt it with your private key.
Common Algorithms
RSA is the most well-known asymmetric algorithm, used in SSL/TLS certificates and email encryption. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) provides equivalent security with shorter keys, making it more efficient.
Encryption in Daily Life
Encryption protects you constantly, often without you noticing. HTTPS encrypts your web browsing. End-to-end encryption protects your messages in apps like Signal and WhatsApp. Full-disk encryption protects your laptop data if it is stolen. VPNs encrypt your internet traffic.
Key Management
